STANFORD - The No. 17 California men's soccer team ended the regular season with a loss as Stanford defeated the Golden Bears, 1-0, Saturday night at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium. Cal ended the regular season with a record of 11-5-2, 6-3-1 and the Cardinal improved to 7-6-5, 4-4-2.
Stanford's Thiago SaFreire scored the lone goal of the game with an assist from Kyle Hency. The score occurred in the 62nd minute when the ball was stopped in the box and SaFreire booted a shot in the upper left corner of the goal. Hency also earned a shot on goal.
The Bears outshot Stanford, 15-11, and managed four shots on goal. Junior Pat Marion recorded two shots on goal, while senior Javier Ayala-Hil and freshman Andrew Wiedeman notched the other two. Ayala-Hil tallied five shots total in the contest and Wiedeman took four shots.
Cal, the 2007 Pac-10 champions, will find out when and where it will be playing in the NCAA Tournament when ESPNews broadcasts the tournament field Monday, Nov. 19, at 2:30 p.m.
