REDWOOD SHORES - In the 101st meeting between the two Pac-12 rivals, top-ranked Washington continued its winning streak over third-ranked California, sweeping all four races Saturday morning at Redwood Shores. In the process, the Huskies successfully defended the Schoch Cup for the sixth consecutive season.
Washington now leads the all-time series 70-30-1. The Schoch Cup is awarded annually to the winner of the varsity eight dual race between Cal and Washington.
After going toe-to-toe against then-No. 1 Harvard in the season opener at the San Diego Crew Classic, and following that performance with a strong showing at last week's Stanford Invitational, Cal head coach Mike Teti said he was disappointed overall with the Bears' performance on Saturday.
"It's disappointing," Teti said. "Washington is a great program every year, but I think we underperformed today. We'll have to get back to work. We have five weeks until the end of the season. We're going to have to get better. I think the guys will do that."
In the varsity eight race for the Schoch Cup, the Huskies topped the Bears by just under 10 seconds, 5:30.5-5:40.3. The closest race of the day was the freshman eight. Washington crossed the finish line with a time of 5:38.5 to Cal's 5:43.4. The Bears are very encouraged by their freshmen, so it was an good sign for their outlook.
"The four raced well, and the freshmen raced well," Teti said. "The fours they just jumped into that boat this week. It was a pretty good performance. The freshmen were close for most of the way. They need to get a little better, but it's a good class and we're psyched to have them here."
Cal returns to Redwood Shores next Saturday to take on Stanford in The Big Row.
