Post Game Quotes: Jan. 2 vs Stanford
Jan. 2, 2011
Head Coach Joanne Boyle
"I would just like to give Stanford a lot of credit. I think they are playing great basketball right now. Tara has done an incredible job with them and they are a force to be reckoned with in the Pac-10. A lot of respect to them. If my team can find a way to play hard and decide they want to compete every night, I think we can be good. But right now, we are struggling with an identity and a work ethic that is hurting us."
"It's not our talent, though Tara does a great scouting report on us and takes things away from us that other teams can't. We told the team at the beginning of the game, there are three things you can control. Transition defense - we're fast, they shouldn't be able to out run us. Offensive rebounds - just get a body on somebody. And contested three point shots. And they outrebounded us by 23, though I get they are big. But how many of our bodies were on their bodies? And the uncontested three, there were quite a few of those at the end of the game."
"I think the thing I have been really proud about my teams in the past is I think that everyone has said they work hard. We have always been a talented team, but more so we have always worked hard. We don't have an identity this year, 12 games in. And we are a passive team right now and it is really hurting us. They need to compete. We don't have a consistent competitiveness about us just yet. At times it is there, but consistently you are not going to be in the game with a team like this if they are not going to compete for 40 minutes."
On whether Stanford's size was the reason Cal struggled down low
"In the last ten minutes of the game, Talia and Rama found their touches. That was just being a little more patient and reversing the ball. They are not going to get initial touches because Kayla is in the middle of the paint and helping, and then Eliza started hitting a couple of pull ups in the lane, so I think we just needed some patience to get it on the back end."
On how she feels about going into Pac-10 play
"We quickly have to turn around and play Arizona State. They are much more like a Texas A&M. They are very talented. Arizona is much better this year. USC, UCLA. It's not going to get much easier."
