CALIFORNIA HEAD COACH MIKE MONTGOMERY
On the game
"Well. I think it points out how hard it is to win, on the road, in this league. They obviously played extremely well. We didn't attack the 1-3-1 very well, and that put us back on our heels a little bit. We probably should have been up on the first half rather than tied. We missed some lay-ups, and had one-on-one, but couldn't finish. We felt that the zone might be the thing to do. [Jared] Cunningham is a good one-on-one player and [we] thought that might be a problem. In retrospect, obviously, we are a man team, and I don't know whether we would have been able to stay out of foul trouble with that. We couldn't guard Cunningham in the second half, so whether we would have been able to do that the whole game, we wouldn't know. The fact is they played extremely well. When we all decided to do something differently, or we wouldn't win, we started attacking the basket, started making plays, got to within four points with the ball, and with a real chance, then we turned it over and took us out of any chance at that point and time. We needed to play with that kind of aggressiveness, and we didn't do that."
On Oregon State's three-point shooting
"We knew [Ahmad] Starks was a really good three-point shooter. Percentage wise, if you look at Angus Brandt, he's a good shooter. Percentage wise, he's a good shooter. About 6-for-12 over the whole season. Starks had a really good game, and we knew he could shoot it, but we thought we could defend him. We have guys like that, but he made some really tough shots."
On Oregon State's defensive traps
"We were just tentative. Instead of just driving and hitting the open guy, we all were tentative. It caused us some problems in terms of getting the ball to the basket and finishing some plays."
Allen Crabbe, So. G
On making a run at the end of the game
"We just got more aggressive, and thought if we were going to make a run, we needed it, quick, so we did and got back within four points. But they just played really aggressive, so give credit to them."
Jorge Gutierrez, Sr. G
On being the road team
"We had to be aggressive, and we had to play defense. We were scoring, but we didn't play good enough defense."
On maintaining the momentum on the comeback
"I didn't think it was hard to maintain. We had it to that point, and we could have done a better job of maintaining it but we didn't play good enough defense to maintain it."
