BERKELEY - Junior guard Jorge Gutierrez, who averaged 14.6 ppg and 4.4 apg this season, took home the honor as California's Most Valuable Player for 2010-11 season. He was also named the team's Defensive Player of the Year. Gutierrez, senior center Markhuri Sanders-Frison and junior forward Harper Kamp took home all of the team awards.
Gutierrez, who was named to the All-Pac-10 first team Pac-10 all-defensive team and USBWA All-District team, reached double figures in 25 of the 33 games last season, and 10 in a row before the streak was snapped in the regular-season finale on March 5. During his streak of 10 consecutive double-digit performances, he averaged 20.3 ppg. He scored at least 20 points seven times during the campaign, including a game-high 25 vs. Mississippi in the first round of the NIT. In the Feb. 20 overtime win vs. UCLA, Gutierrez carried Cal to the win with a new personal-best 34 points. He scored nine of those points in the extra session. Ever the tough defender, Gutierrez's 54 steals led the team and placed him seventh on the school's single-season steals list. He swiped four steals in three of the last five games.
Sanders-Frison, Cal's lone senior on last year's squad, was not only the team's leader on the boards, but he also earned Cal's highest field goal percentage on the year (58.9 percent). Sanders-Frison missed both games in the NIT with a dislocated shoulder. Prior to suffering the injury, he posted seven double-doubles. He nailed two three-pointers against USC on Feb. 17 in the final minute to give him a new career high of 23 points, part of his sixth career double-double (11 rebounds). On March 5 against Stanford, he registered his seventh career double-double (13 points, 13 rebounds). His fifth double-double came against Washington State (14 points, 10 rebounds) on Jan. 13. He got his senior season off to a great start with his first career double-double against Cal State Northridge on Nov. 16, tallying 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Kamp was named to the All-Pac-10 second team and the NABC all-district second team. He made 129 of his 158 tries (.816) from the charity stripe, helping Cal secure a new school record in free throws made (582) and attempted (838). Kamp's season percentage was a team best, as well. After sitting out all of last season with a knee injury, Kamp wasted no time with immediately becoming a key factor on the 2010-11 squad. He posted a career-best 33 points against Arizona on Feb. 5, and secured 20-point outings in five other contests. Kamp also earned his second double-double against the Wildcats on Feb. 5, boasting a personal-best-tying 10 rebounds. On Feb. 17 against USC, Kamp garnered his third double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
