TEMPE, Ariz. - No. 4 California enjoyed an offensive breakout game Saturday night, shutting out Arizona State 6-0 under the Tempe stars in Pac-10 action at Farrington Stadium. Junior SS Chelsea Spencer caught the fever, launching two home runs toward center field while junior 2B Jessica Pamanian jacked one of her own over the left field wall.
Arizona State (31-26 overall, 1-12 in the Pac-10) managed only six hits against sophomore P Kristina Thorson (19-3), who picked up the win for California (39-11 overall, 6-8 in the Pac-10), striking out four and refusing any walks. Sophomore P Ashley Werschky (7-7) took the loss for the Sun Devils. California's 13 hits were its most since March 5 when the Bears won at Cal State Fullerton, 11-0, and ties for third its most hits this season.
The Bears jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning when sophomore LF Lindsay James singled to left with one out and moved up to third on sophomore C Haley Woods' double off the center field fence. Junior CF Kaleo Eldredge followed with a bloop single to left that brought James across the plate.
ASU had a chance to tie the game in the bottom half of the first when senior CF Kristin Farber singled, but she was later left stranded at third. Cal continued its scoring in the third when Spencer led off the inning with a solo home run to make it 2-0. The Bears tacked on one more in the fifth off two Arizona State errors for a 3-0 advantage.
Back-to-back home runs by Pamanian and Spencer resulted in a three-run seventh to lock up the game for Cal.
Thorson gave up only a single hit to the Sun Devils in her first six innings from the circle. Her counterpart Werschky scattered 13 hits and allowed five earned runs with three strikeouts. She also had two of Arizona State's six hits. Junior LF Valerie Sevilla notched her team and conference-leading 17th double of the year in the sixth inning with two outs but was left stranded by ASU's missing offense.
Eldredge led Cal at the plate with a 4-for-4 night with a run scored and an RBI. Spencer and Pamanian both finished 2-for-4 with two RBI's, Spencer's off her two home runs, numbers five and six for the season.
Cal and Arizona State conclude the desert series Sunday at 1 p.m. in Tempe.
