BERKELEY - California's largest contingent in years will compete in the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships when Laura Sanford, Molly Hayes, Kelsey Heiken and Kahley Rowell dive from Thursday, March 10, through Saturday, March 12, at the Minnesota Aquatics Center in Minneapolis, Minn. The four Golden Bears hope to qualify for and join several Cal swimmers at the NCAA Championships slated for March 17-19 in Austin, Texas. The divers are coming off a strong showing at the Pac-10 Championships, in which they produced finalists in all three events.
Air Force is the host of the zonal meet, which includes a men's competition. The women compete in the three-meter springboard on Thursday, the one-meter springboard on Friday and the platform on Saturday.
Scouting the Golden Bears
Molly Hayes, a junior from Los Gatos, Calif., and Kelsey Heiken, a sophomore from San Clemente, Calif., are going back to the NCAA zonal meet after participating in 2010. Both Bears reached two finals at Pac-10s. Hayes placed a team-best sixth on the one-meter springboard with a score of 284.75 and took seventh place on the platform with a score of 214.55. Heiken was the only Bear to make the three-meter springboard final, posting an NCAA zonal qualifying score of 292.05 in eighth place, and finished behind Hayes at one meter in seventh place with a zonal qualifier of 275.30.
Kahley Rowell, a freshman from Dove Canyon, Calif., notched Cal's best finish on the platform at Pac-10s, taking fifth place with a zonal qualifying score of 250.10. She just missed making it into the three-meter final, as she finished ninth. Rowell did post a zonal qualifier of 289.80 in the prelim. Laura Sanford, a senior from San Diego, finished sixth in the platform final with a score of 222.40. Sanford had produced Cal's top finish in the platform prelim, placing fourth with a score of 245.80.
