LOS ANGELES - The California women's tennis team had three players advance into Saturday's quarterfinals as Amy Jensen, Claire Curran and Anita Kurimay each won a pair of matches during Friday's opening day of play at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic at the Sherwood Country Club in Los Angeles.
Jensen blew past Stanford's Sarah Pestieau 6-0, 7-5 in the first round, then defeated Pepperdine's Nadine Rastetter in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0, to claim her spot in the quarterfinals. Claire Curran, who defeated the No. 6 seed Kerry Giardino of ASU and Ipek Senoglu of Pepperding, and Anita Kurimay, who knocked off Jennifer Heiser of Stanford and Monique Allegre of Arizona, also advanced.
For a while, it looked like the Bears might place as many as five players into the quarterfinal round as Amanda Augustus and Karoline Borgersen each had an easy go of it in their respective opening round matches. However, Augustus, the tournament's No. 4 seed, couldn't get past Annica Cooper of UCLA, while Teryn Ashley of Stanford defeated Borgersen in round two.
The action continues on Saturday at the NCTC with quarterfinal action in singles and the opening rounds of play in the doubles draw.
