Round 1 Results

STANFORD, Calif. - No. 33 California shot a 311 to stand in eighth place after the first round of the Pac-10 Women's Golf Championships, Friday, at the Stanford Golf Course. The Bears, however, are only six shots behind fifth-place Arizona (305), last year's conference champion, and lead 26th-ranked Oregon State (313) by two shots. Host Stanford, ranked 10th nationally, sits atop the leader board with a three-over-par 291, five shots ahead of sixth-ranked USC (296), and 10 shots ahead of fifth-ranked Arizona State (301).

The Golden Bears are on pace to record their best Pac-10 finish in the school's four-year history. In three previous conference championships, the Bears finished 10th (1996), ninth (1997) and ninth (1998).

Juniors Lisa Yamane, who has led Cal in three of five spring tournaments, and Nicole Bolter pace the Bears after the first round with a 77, good for a share of 22nd-place. Bolter carded a 35 on the front nine holes to lead all 57 golfers.

Freshman Leila Chartrand of USC leads the individual competition after firing a two-under par 70. Stanford's Hilary Homeyer is second at 71, followed by her teammate Julie Dunn and ASU's Grace Park tied at 72.

Play continues tomorrow with the second round teeing off at 8:30 a.m. The final round is slated for Sunday, at 8:30 a.m.
