Cal Women's Water Polo Defeats San Jose State, 13-8

BERKELEY, CA - The No. 2 ranked University of California women's water polo team (10-2) defeated San Jose State (5-10), 13-8, Friday at Spieker Aquatics Complex at Cal.
The Bears gave up the match's first goal, but then dominated the contest the rest of the way, scoring three goals in each of the first three quarters and tallying four goals in the final period for the 13-8 win.
Cal was led by three goals apiece from juniors Colette Glinkowski and Heather Petri. Senior Melanie vonHartitzsch, and freshmen Chris Lane and Breena Fleener, added two goals each. Senior goalie Evi Schueller had three saves.
"We played steady," said assistant coach Steve Doten. "After allowing San Jose State to score first, we were able to come back strong."
The Bears will next face No. 2 ranked Stanford (tied in the national rankings with Cal), who had defeated Cal, 5-3, in the last match up between the Bay Area rivals, Feb. 28 in the semifinals of the UC Santa Barbara Tournament. On Feb. 14 the Bears had defeated the Cardinal, 6-3, in the semifinals of the UC San Diego Tournament.
