INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - California's Evan Lane took 12th place in the 50-meter freestyle final at USA Swimming's World Championship Trials on Sunday at the IU Natatorium. The junior's result - a time of 23.31 - was the Golden Bears' best finish on Day Three of the Trials, which will determine the U.S. teams at the July World Championships and at the August World University Games.
Lane, competing for his California Aquatics club, placed fourth in the consolation final of the 50 free and 12th overall. Freshman teammate Joe Whittington, competing for Bakersfield Swim Club, was eighth in the B Final, swimming a time of 23.76 to take 16th place overall in the 50 free. Also in the 50 free, Bears freshman William Copeland was 35th (24.19) and junior Matt Lyon (California Aquatics) was 38th (24.38).
Sophomore teammate Patrick O'Neil (Roseburg Swim Team) took second (55.39) in the C Final for 18th place overall in the 100 butterfly final.
Bears freshman Emily Silver (California Aquatics) won the C Final to take 17th place overall in the women's 50-meter freestyle final in 25.96.
Day four of the World Championship Trials begins on Monday with the men's 100-meter freestyle preliminary.
