Aug. 11, 2001

The Cal football team opened practice for the 2001 season with a two-hour workout Saturday morning on Witter Field.

The Bears welcomed 105 players in the first session of two-a-days. Cal will remain on campus through Monday night, and the Bears will make their annual trip to Cal State Stanislaus in Turlock Tuesday morning, where they will stay through Aug. 24.

Saturday morning's practice, which was held in shorts, featured series of individual drills for all positions, 7-on-7 sessions and a special teams look at the punting game. Finding a replacement for punter Nick Harris, who is now with the Denver Broncos, is a key component of the preseason. Sophomore Tyler Fredrickson came out of spring as the leading candidate, but he faces a challenge from several teammates, including junior Jeremy Hershey and freshmen Eric Stuckman and Taylor Kunzi.

"We had a nice, crisp first practice," head coach Tom Holmoe said. "I saw a lot of good-looking players out there. I think we'll have better depth and experience than we've had the last couple of seasons. If we can keep up our concentration and intensity, we have the makings of a good team."

Cal will work out again Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. and return to the field Sunday at both 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and Monday at 7 p.m.
