BERKELEY - Solomon Hughes scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Joe Shipp tallied 20 points, as well, to lead Cal to a convincing 111-74 victory over the L.A. City Stars in the Bears' exhibition opener Monday night at Haas Pavilion.

Six players reached double figures and seven different players made at least one three-pointer for Cal. For the game, the Bears shot 62.1 percent from the field and made 11-of-19 attempts from behind the arc.

In addition to Shipp and Hughes, Ryan Forehan-Kelly added 13 points, while Dennis Gates had 12 and Jamal Sampson and Donte Smith had 10 apiece.

The L.A. City Stars scored the first two points of the game. Cal then quickly went ahead 18-6 and never looked back. The lead reached 20 points at 46-26 with 3:49 left in the first half, and the Bears went into intermission with a 61-37 advantage.

In the second half, Cal's lead ballooned to a high of 44 points at 98-54 with 8:05 to go.

Other strong performances came from Gabriel Hughes, who had eight points and nine rebounds, and Shantay Legans, who had three points and eight assists in just 15 minutes.

Brian Wethers sat out the game with tendinitis in his knee, but he is listed as probable for Friday's exhibition game vs. EA Sports Friday at 8 p.m. Freshman Amit Tamir also watched the game in street clothes while he waits for some paper work to be processed by the NCAA to gain his eligibility. He also hopes to play Friday.

The L.A. City Stars, who earlier beat Long Beach State and took USC to overtime, were paced by Derrick Higgins' 16 points.
