Bears Qualify for Day 1 Finals at Texas Invitational

Complete Results of Men's Day 1 Preliminaries

AUSTIN, Texas - California Golden Bears Jernej Godec and Daniel Lysaught reached the finals of the 100-yard butterfly and 500-yard freestyle, respectively, on Thursday, the first day of the Texas Invitational held at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. Godec, a sophomore, placed sixth in the 100 fly preliminary in a time of 47.92, while Lysaught, a junior, was eighth in the 500 free prelim in a time of 4:23.93 to reach the finals.

Godec swam an NCAA B standard qualifying time in the 100 fly, in which junior teammate Patrick O'Neil placed 12th (49.04) to qualify for the consolation final.

Also, former Bears Bart Kizierowski and Rolandas Gimbutis, swimming for the Cal Aquatics club, reached the final of the 50 freestyle. Kizierowski, Cal's current volunteer assistant coach, was third (19.99) and Gimbutis was eighth (20.23) in today's morning prelim.

Cal sophomore Joe Whittington was the current Bears' top finisher in the 50 free, swimming an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 20.30 to place 10th. Junior teammate Jonas Tilly and Cal sophomore Garrett Wagner swam provisional qualifying times of 20.31 to tie for 11th place and join Whittington, 13th-place Godec (20.40) and 15th-place senior teammate Milorad Cavic (20.44) in the consolation final for the 50 free.

Junior Graham Lentz was Cal's top finisher in the 200 individual medley, qualifying for the consolation final with a ninth-place finish (1:51.39). Cal freshman Ian Lentz, Graham's younger brother, was next best at 17th (1:53.08), while Bears senior Henrique Barbosa was 23rd (1:53.69).

In the prelim for three-meter diving, Cal sophomore Javier Rivas placed seventh, with 265.85 points, and freshman teammate Sam Helvie was 15th, with 213.80.

The Texas Invitational reconvenes this evening at 6 p.m. CT for the finals of day one.
