BERKELEY, Calif.-- The fifth ranked California women's tennis team cruised to a 9-0 victory over No. 29 San Diego at the Hellman Tennis Center today. With the win, the Bears improve to 12-2 while the Toreras fall to 6-5.
At No. 1 singles, Amanda Augustus faced a formidable opponent in eighth-ranked Zuzana Lesenarova, who came into the match with a 9-1 dual match record. The first game took over 15 minutes to play, indicating that this match would be a battle. Nonetheless, Augustus bore down to crank out a 7-5, 6-3 victory to improve her record to 19-4 on the year. Just midway though the schedule, Augustus has already matched her win total from last season.
Esther Knox struggled at No. 2, dropping the first set, 6-3, before prevailing in three sets over Brigid Joyce for her sixth dual match victory of the season.
Cal took advantage of the fact USD did not play their regular Nos. 4 and 5 singles players, who were both out with injuries, and posted decisive victories in the bottom half of the lineup.
San Diego native, Jenny Lee, teamed with Francesca La'O at No. 3 doubles and won seven straight games en route to an 8-1 victory to set the tone for a Cal sweep in doubles action. The duo has now won five straight dual matches and boasts a 11-3 season record.
