BERKELEY - In the interest of public safety, the University of California Athletic Department announced today that additional security measures will be implemented at Memorial Stadium, beginning with Saturday's football game between the Golden Bears and the University of Washington.

The new security requirements will prohibit fans from entering Memorial Stadium with coolers, backpacks and large bags. Small bags, such as purses and diaper bags, will be subject to search before entering the stadium. Fans are encouraged to arrive early and allow for additional time when entering the venue.

"The welfare and safety of our fans was our foremost consideration in making this decision," said Cal Athletic Director Steve Gladstone. "We reviewed existing procedures, held discussions with our stadium security staff, UC Berkeley Police and other security experts before establishing the additional measures. These new requirements are consistent with other major athletic facilities in the country, and we appreciate our fans' patience and understanding in following the procedures."

Kickoff time for Saturday's game is 2 p.m. Parking lots will open at 8 a.m. on game day, while stadium gates will open at noon.
