Cal Celebrates Three Anniversaries This Season
The Cal football program celebrates three significant anniversaries during the 2002 season. This fall marks the 120th year of football competition at the school. Over the years, the Bears have compiled an all-time NCAA record of 559-439-51. Cal's victory total ranks 33rd among Division IA schools and ahead of such programs as Boston College, Wisconsin, Maryland, Illinois, Stanford, Purdue, Oregon, UCLA and Miami (Fla.).
The Bears also begin their 80th year in Memorial Stadium with the season-opener Aug. 31 vs. Baylor. Cal has accumulated a 274-197-16 (.579) mark in Strawberry Canyon, starting with a 9-0 win over Stanford on Nov. 24, 1923.
Although it may be hard to believe, this November represents the 20th anniversary of "The Play" - Cal's 57-yard five-lateral kickoff return through the Stanford Band that resulted in a 25-20 Golden Bear victory in he Big Game Nov. 20, 1982.
Earliest Start Ever for Cal Opener
Cal's Aug. 31 opener against Baylor ties for the earliest start to a season in school history, matching the Aug. 31, 1985 date vs. San Jose State (a 48-21 Cal win). However, next year, the Bears begin the 2003 season one day sooner, hosting Southern Mississippi on Aug. 30, 2003 in Memorial Stadium.
Senior Joe Igber Picks 4th Number in 4 Years
Continuing with a tradition he began in high school when he changed uniform numbers every season, senior tailback Joe Igber will don number 20 this fall. Igber wore number 29 as a freshman, number 6 as a sophomore and number 30 last year. With 1,994 career yards, Igber ranks seventh on Cal's all-time rushing list, with Lindsey Chapman (1991-93) just ahead with 2,190 yards.
Strong Oregon Connection on Cal Coaching Staff
New Cal head coach Jeff Tedford, who spent the past four years as offensive coordinator at Oregon, has assembled a coaching staff that has a distinctive Duck flavor. Four assistant coaches, plus one staff member, either coached or played at the Eugene school.

New Turfs at Memorial Stadium, Maxwell Family Field
This summer has been a busy time in Strawberry Canyon with the surfaces at both Memorial Stadium and Maxwell Family Field (formerly Kleeberger Field) being replaced. For the first time since grass was installed in the stadium in 1995, the entire surface was re-sodded. In the past, only worn areas had been replaced. This year's project corrected grade changes, undulations and normal wear and tear to give the Bears a smoother surface to compete on. The grass is a hybrid Bermuda perennial rye mix, the same grass that is used at both Network Associates Coliseum (Raiders) and Candlestick Park (49ers).
Thanks to a generous gift by Brian and Jennifer Maxwell, a new artificial turf is being installed on the field just north of Memorial Stadium. The work includes a new AstroTurf 12 irrigated competitive surface, a new synthetic warning track and safer edge treatments. The facility, which is used by several Cal teams and intramural sports, will re-open in September.
Golden Bear Notes ...
Junior Mark Wilson has switched from right offensive tackle to left tackle, taking the place of four-year starter Langston Walker, who was selected in the second round of the NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders last April ... senior fullback Ryan Stanger will not play for the Bears this season due to an abdominal injury ... Cal has signed a two-year contract to play Ohio State; the Bears travel to Columbus on Sept. 14, 2012, with the Buckeyes visiting Berkeley on Sept. 14, 2013 ... in addition to Joe Igber, several other players will sport new numbers this fall, including CB James Bethea (3) and OL Jonathan Giesel (55).
