STANFORD, Calif. -

The 08-09 California women's golf team finished tied for eighth place by posting a combined +20 (284, 292, 296 - 872) at the Stanford Intercollegiate in Stanford, Calif. to close out the fall season. Leading the Golden Bears was sophomore Pia Halbig, whose 54 hole total of 215 (70, 70, 75 - 215) was good for a tie for fourteenth individually.

UCLA won the tournament by finishing -8 (277, 285, 282 - 844).

Also competing for Cal were seniors Allison Goodman (72, 75, 72 - 219, +6) and Shannon Yocum (70, 73, 77 - 220, +7) who tied for 32nd and 38th, respectively. Freshmen Angela Villela (72, 77, 72 - 221, +8) and Diane Kwon (74, 74, 80 - 228, +15) rounded out the Bear lineup. Playing as an individual, junior Roseanne Niven finished strong to post a +17 (81, 74, 75 - 230).

"We didn't play that great, but we still finished eighth in a national championship field," said Coach Nancy McDaniel, "We are looking forward to the off season and building on what could be a really strong year. I think we had a disappointing day to end it, but that will keep us hungry for the spring. We never really got anything going here at Stanford, but when we do, we will find ourselves to be a top ten team. We are leaving Stanford a little hungrier than when we got here."

The Bears had won their first two fall tournaments, the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic in Fort Collins, Colo., back on Sept. 8-9, when the team shot an 18-under 846 (284-273-289) and the Badger Invitational in Verona, Wisc., on Sept. 27-28, when the team shot an 889 (296, 297, 296 +25). On Oct. 6-8, Cal tied for fourth at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational in Sammamish, Wash. (310, 308, 309 - 927, +63). The Bears have now finished up fall play and will not play another tournament until the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge on Feb. 9-10 in Palos Verdes, Calif.
