BERKELEY - The California women's tennis team will open the 2008 dual season with a No. 6 ranking in the first national poll administered by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The Golden Bears completed the 2007 campaign with a 23-7 overall record (5-3 Pac-10) and a No. 5 ranking after making a run to the national semifinal match at the NCAA Championships.

Defending NCAA Champion Georgia Tech received 25 of the 26 first place votes to claim the top spot in the poll. Cal is joined in the top 10 by three other Pac-10 schools with Stanford at No. 2, No. 3 UCLA and No. 8 USC. In all, the Bears will face seven teams ranked in the ITA Top 30 in dual play this season.

Senior Susie Babos opens her final season with the Bears with a No. 10 singles ranking after compiling a 12-3 record in fall tournaments on her way to claiming her second consecutive Riviera All-American Championship title. Babos became only the fourth player to win back-to-back All-American Championship crowns and ran her national championship total to three including her 2006 NCAA singles title.

Three other players hold national rankings among singles players. Junior Bojana Bobusic is ranked a career-high No. 31 after nabbing a team-high 14 wins in tournament play in the fall. Seniors Marion Ravelojaona and Cristina Visico are ranked No. 52 and No. 54 respectively heading into dual season play. Visico reached the Wilson/ITA Northwest Regional Championship final and compiled a 7-5 overall record in the fall. Among doubles teams, seniors Susie Babos and Stephanie Kusano hold the No. 36 national ranking.

The Bears will host Fresno State, St. Mary's and Nevada in the Cal Winter Invitational this weekend (Jan. 18-20) before opening dual matches on the road at Long Beach State (Jan. 26, 1:30 p.m.) and at Pepperdine (Jan. 27, 12 p.m.). Cal's first home dual matches will be on Sunday, Feb. 3 against San Francisco at 10 a.m. followed by UC Davis at 2 p.m. Check CalBears.com for the most up-to-date schedules and times.
