No. 16 Cal Softball Splits with No. 10 ASU
May 2, 1999
BERKELEY - Senior catcher Megumi Takasaki hit a two-run home run in to bottom of the sixth inning to break a 3-3 tie and lift 16th-ranked California to a 5-3 victory over No. 10 Arizona State in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday on Levine-Fricke Field.
In the nightcap, Arizona State freshman Erica Beach tossed a perfect game to lead the Sun Devils to a 4-0 win. Cal is now 36-19 on the year and 7-14 in the Pac-10, while ASU is 37-19 and 8-14.
In the first game, Holly Yost gave the Bears a quick 3-0 lead with a three-run homer in the first inning. The Sun Devils, though, tied the score when pinch hitter Erin Wardein hit a three-run shot of her own in the fifth inning.
But in the sixth, Lisa Iancin reached on an error and Takasaki knocked her fourth home run of the season over the center field fence. Nicole DiSalvio, who pitched 2 1/3 innings of hitless relief, picked up the win for the Bears.
In the second game, ASU scored all four its runs on just one base hit. Andrea Rodgers led off the third inning with a double off Yost. An error and two hit batters later, it was 1-0 ASU and DiSalvio came into relieve Yost. However, Cal's troubles in the field continued as they committed two more errors in the inning before getting out of the frame down, 4-0.
That was all Beach would need, as she allowed just one ball out of the infield during the game. Beach struck out two to improve her record to 16-9 on the year.
Cal plays its next three doubleheaders on the road - at Sacramento State May 5, at Oregon State May 8 and at Oregon May 9 - before returning home for the season-finale vs. Stanford May 15 at 1 p.m.
