SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The sixth-ranked California women's tennis team lost to No. 11 William & Mary, 5-3, today in the first round of the NCAA championships at Notre Dame. The Bears ended their season with a 18-6 overall, 10-2 Pac-10 finish while William & Mary (23-8, 6-0 Colonial Athletic Assoc.) advances to the quarterfinals for the second straight year.

Junior Amanda Augustus, ranked No. 5 in the nation, suffered a 6-4, 6-7 (0), 6-4 loss to No. 6 Lauren Nikolaus at No. 1 singles. It was Augustus' first loss in team competition since April 7 against Stanford and her record now stands at 26-8. With the win, Nikolaus revenged on her three set loss to Augustus last fall at the Riviera All-American. She now needs just three more victories to break William & Mary's all-time record for wins in a season (38).

Cal's singles victories came at the Nos. 2-4 positions. Amy Jensen, playing at No. 2 for just the fifth time this year, overwhelmed No. 31 Michelle O, 6-4, 6-0. Jensen finished her sophomore campaign with a 22-12 overall record.

No. 43 Esther Knox handed Carolijn van Rossum a 6-2, 6-4 loss in the No. 3 match. Knox finished team competition 4-1 at the No. 3 spot and now has a 21-16 overall record.

Freshman Anita Kurimay had a wild match at No. 4 in her first showing at the NCAAs. She won the first set, 6-3, and lost the second, 1-6, before rebounding to take the third, 6-1 against Tari Ann Toro.

With the score tied at three apiece, the Tribe and the Bears entered doubles play. At No. 2, Knox and Kurimay, the nation's No. 22-ranked tandem were upset by Toro and Laura Tsaggaris, 8-6. Meanwhile, Francesca La'O and Jenny Lee fell to Annette Oosters and van Rossum, 8-6, in the No. 3 match to end the Bears short run at the NCAA championships.

Augustus and Knox will compete in next week's NCAA singles tournament and the teams of Augustus/Jensen and Kurimay/Knox will represent Cal in the NCAA doubles event. Both individual tournament draws will be posted on Sunday, May 24 and play is scheduled to begin on Monday, May 25.
