AUSTIN, Texas - California won 11 out of 20 events, including four of five relays, to win a two-day tri-meet against Texas and Florida on Saturday morning at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. The Golden Bears (2-0), who won three of eight events on Saturday, defeated the host Longhorns, 208-162, and the Gators, 247-123. The meet was a good early season test for the Bears, who last faced Florida and Texas at the 2005 NCAA Championships last March in Minneapolis, Minn., where Florida finished fifth, behind fourth-place Cal, and Texas was seventh.

However, both Cal and Florida were missing top swimmers - 2004 Olympians Milorad Cavic (back spasms) and Ryan Lochte (shoulder), respectively - due to injury.

Freshman David Russell joined junior teammate Jonas Tilly as Cal's only multiple winners in individual events when Russell won the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 49.28 on Saturday. Russell had won the 200-yard backstroke on Friday.

The quartet of Russell, senior Henrique Barbosa, sophomore Jernej Godec and Tilly opened the Saturday session of the tri-meet by winning the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:30.21. In the next event, the 400 individual medley, Cal's top finishers were senior Miguel Molina, in third place (3:56.32), and sophomore Louis Vayo, in fourth (3:58.77). Florida's Bradley Ally (3:54.38) won the 400 IM.

The Bears took four of the top five spots in the 100 butterfly. Godec won the race in an NCAA B standard qualifying time of 48.25, Tilly took second (49.07) and junior Patrick O'Neil was third (49.16). Sophomore Dominic Cathey was fifth (49.79). In the following event, the 200 freestyle, Cal sophomore Dominik Meichtry was third (1:38.25) and junior Daniel Lysaught was sixth (1:40.62) behind winning Longhorn Matthew McGinnis (1:36.66). Cal also had three of the top times in the 100 breaststroke, with Barbosa second (56.07), junior Graham Lentz third (56.30) and Molina fifth (57.33) behind first-place Christian Schnurr (55.26) of Texas.

After Godec placed second (49.81) to Russell in the 100 back, freshman Sam Helvie had Cal's top finish (4th in 264.20) on the one-meter springboard. Teammate Javier Rivas followed in fifth (263.50) and fellow Cal sophomore Mark Wes was ninth (231.60). Texas diver Bailey Gao (332.45) won the event.

The Cal A squad of Molina, Meichtry, Lysaught and Vayo ended the meet with a runner-up finish (6:38.82) to the Texas A team (6:36.05) in the 800-free relay.

Cal returns to action at the Pacific Tiger Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Stockton, Calif.
