No. 8 Cal Travels to Pac-10 Championships

BERKELEY, Calif. - CAL TRAVELS TO PAC-10 CHAMPIONSHIPS
No. 8 California travels to the Pac-10 Championships Thursday-Sunday, April 24-27 at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club and Libby Park in Ojai, Calif. The Golden Bears finished the regular season with a 16-5 overall record and in third place in the Pac-10 with a 6-2 mark. The Pac-10 Championships is not a team competition. The tournament features two flights each of singles and doubles competition.

A LOOK AT THE DRAWS
Five Cal players are entered in the Pac-10 Singles Championship draw - Bojana Bobusic, Claire Ilcinkas, No. 5-seeded Susie Babos, No. 3-seeded Marina Cossou and Cristina Visico. Stephanie Kusano is the No. 1 seed from Cal in the invitational flight. Rachael Dillon, Bobbie Englert and Darron Moore are also in the invitational draw. Babos and Kusano are the No. 4 seed in the doubles championship draw. Also in the doubles championship flight are Cossou and Ilcinkas and Bobusic and Visico. Cal is represented in the doubles invitational draw by Dillon and Moore.

2007 PAC-10 CHAMPIONSHIPS IN REVIEW
Senior Susie Babos was the Pac-10 singles runner-up, falling in the championship match to USC's Lindsey Nelson, 6-2, 6-2. Then-freshman Nina Henkel from Cal advanced to the quarterfinals, where she lost to Nelson, 6-3, 7-5. The doubles duo of Henkel and current senior Stephanie Kusano lost in the semifinals, 9-8, to Stanford's Lindsay Burdette and Anne Yelsey.

A LOOK AT THE RANKINGS
Cal fell two spots to No. 8 in the ITA national rankings. The Bears finished 2007 with the No. 5 ranking and have completed six seasons ranked No. 4, the team's highest final ranking. In singles, Marina Cossou is No. 7, Susie Babos is No. 18, Cristina Visico is No. 43, Claire Ilcinkas is No. 86, Bojana Bobusic is No. 87 and Marion Ravelojaona is No. 119. In doubles, Babos and Kusano are slotted No. 17.

CAL FALLS TO STANFORD IN REGULAR-SEASON FINALE
Then-No. 6 California fell to then-No. 3 Stanford, 5-2, April 19 in the regular-season finale for both teams with a share of the Pac-10 title on the line at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The Golden Bears dropped to 16-5 overall (6-2 Pac-10), while the Cardinal improved to 19-4 and tied for the conference title with UCLA at 7-1. In February, Cal downed Stanford, 6-1, in Berkeley. The Bears, which lost for just the second time in 12 matches, and Stanford were engaged in an intense battle all day today. Cal's No. 3 doubles team of Bojana Bosusic and Christina Visico claimed a 7-6 victory over Celia Durkin and Carolyn McVeigh. Four of the six singles matches went to three sets. Singles play featured some of the best players in the nation, as 11 of the 12 players were ranked among the top 105, including four in the top 20. Stanford's No. 7 Hilary Barte opened singles play with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over No. 6 Cossou on the No. 1 court. On court five, No. 104 Bobusic put the Bears on the board with a straight-set win (6-3, 7-6) over No. 58 Deason. Bobusic also earned a straight-set singles win against Sacramento State on April 18. The match concluded on court six with Cal's Stephanie Kusano upsetting No. 78 McVeigh, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3, for her second singles win of the weekend.

TWENTY-SOMETHINGS:
Six Cal players have eclipsed the 20-win mark in singles play this season, led by junior Bojana Bobusic who has 28 victories. Freshman Marina Cossou has 27. Junior Claire Ilcinkas has the team's best winning percentage with a 26-6 mark. Senior Susie Babos checks in with 23 singles wins, giving her 125 singles wins in her collegiate career. Fellow seniors Stephanie Kusano and Cristina Visico have notched 24 and 23 singles wins, respectively, on the year. Visico reached a milestone in her collegiate career when she defeated Anna Powaska of Oregon to earn her 100th-career singles victory.
