BERKELEY - Yauger Williams, who returned for his sixth year of eligibility this fall after missing all of last year, will start at offensive guard in Cal's opener against Rutgers, head coach Tom Holmoe announced after Thursday's practice.
Williams will take the place of sophomore Brandon Ludwig, who has been nursing a sore shoulder. Ludwig did practice with the team Thursday and is expected to see playing time against the Scarlet Knights.
In other news, freshman running back Joseph Echema has made the switch from No. 18 to No. 1. With the decision that he will not redshirt this year, he needed to change to a number that was not occupied by another offensive player, backup quarterback Wes Dalton will remain at No. 18.
In addition to Echema, Holmoe indicated that as many as nine other true freshman will see playing time for the Bears: QB Kyle Boller, RB Joe Igber, OL Scott Tercero, C Nolan Bluntzer, DL Daniel Nwangwu, DE Wayne Hunter, LB Calvin Hosey, SAF Nnamdi Asomugha and PK Jeremy Hershey.
Saturday's Cal-Rutgers games kicks off at 2:30 p.m. in Memorial Stadium. The game will be televised live on Fox Sports Bay Area with Brian Webber, Mike Pawlawski and Roxy Bernstein calling the action.
