HEAD COACH NORT THORTON: Nort Thornton, the 1999 Pacific-10 Coach of the Year, is in his 27th season as Cal's head men's swim coach. Thornton, the dean of the Pac-10 swimming coaches, has a career dual meet record of 190-76 (.714) with the Golden Bears and his squad finished fifth in the nation at the 2000 NCAA Championship. Thornton led Cal to back-to-back NCAA titles in 1979 and 1980.
HEAD COACH TERI MCKEEVER: Teri McKeever, the 1999 Pac-10 Coach of the Year, is in her ninth season as Cal's head women's swim coach. McKeever has a 75-33 (.694) dual meet record with the Golden Bears and a 129-55 (.701) overall record (five years as women's coach at Fresno State). She has led Cal to a ninth place finish in 1997, a eighth place finish in 1998, a fifth place finish in 1999 and a fourth place finish in 2000.
BEAR NOTES: The No. 5 ranked California women's swim team is currently 3-1 with victories over San Jose State (183-95), Pacific (131.5-92.5), South Carolina (135-122) and a loss at two-time defending national champion Georgia (156-140). The Bears have been led by freshman standout Natalie Coughlin, who has NCAA automatic qualifying times in the 200 free (1:47.39) and 200 fly (1:58.16), and NCAA consideration times in the 100 free (50.22), 200 back (1:58.89), 100 fly (54.56) and 200 IM (2:02.09). Another top performer for Cal is senior Haley Cope, the 2000 Pac-10 Swimmer of the Year, who has NCAA automatic qualifying times in the 100 back (54.74) and 100 fly (54.40) and NCAA consideration times in the 50 free (23.06) and 100 free (50.50). Sophomore Olympian (gold medal as a member of the United State's 400-meter medley relay) Staciana Stitts has NCAA consideration times in the 100 breast (1:02.77) and 200 breast (2:16.65) as well. The Bears 200 medley relay team of Cope, Stitts, Coughlin and junior Adrienne Mattos also have an NCAA consideration mark with a time of 1:42.01.
The No. 5 ranked Cal men's swim team is 1-0 with a 120-104 victory Oct. 27 at Pacific. The Bears are led by sophomore standout Anthony Ervin, a 2000 Olympic gold medalist in the 50-meter free and a three-time NCAA champion (50 free, 100 free, 400 free relay). Ervin has an NCAA consideration time this season in the 100 free (44.58), while sophomore Daniel Kim and junior Andrew Chan have NCAA consideration times in the 100 breast with marks of 55.91 and 56.21, respectively. Other top times for Cal so far this season includes sophomore Frank Uxa in the 50 free (20.64), junior Matt Burny in the 200 free (1:40.33), junior Mickey Murad in the 500 free (4:36.30), junior George Wilkinson in the 1000 free (9:26.75), freshman Fabian Friedrich in the 100 fly (50.05), junior Hiro Sakoda in the 200 fly (1:51.45), junior Matt Macedo in the 100 back (51.55), freshman Jeff Natalizio in the 200 back (1:51.91), Chan in the 200 breast (2:04.45) and sophomore Joe Bruckart in the 200 (1:54.45) and 400 IM (4:05.17).
NOTING THE TEXAS INVITATIONAL: The Texas Invitational, held at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center, will feature 11 men's teams (No. 1 Texas, No. 4 Arizona, No. 5 Cal, No. 9 Michigan, No. 11 Arizona State, No. 15 SMU, No. 20 Wisconsin, No. 23 Harvard, No. 25 Nebraska, Kansas and TCU) and 14 women's teams (No. 1 UCLA, No. 3 Arizona, No. 4 Stanford, No. 5 Cal, No. 10 Texas, No. 11 Michigan, No. 12 Wisconsin, No. 14 SMU, No. 16 Arizona State, No. 18 Minnesota, No. 22 Nebraska, Harvard, Rice and TCU). Prelims on Dec. 1-2 will be at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. On Dec. 3, prelims are at 9:30 a.m. and finals at 3 p.m. Results will be available on www.TexasSports.com. The Texas Invite has been a non-scoring event the past couple of years.
