Pia Halbig Tied for Lead at Wildcat Invitational

PUERTO PENASCO, Sonora, Mexico -

Sophomore Pia Halbig is tied for the lead after the second round of the Wildcat Invitional golf tournament being held in Puerto Penasco, Sonora, Mexico. The Bears are tenth in the team rankings after the first 36 holes of the 54 hole tournament.

The Bears had a hole to climb out of in the second round of play. Originally reported as finishing the first round in tenth place, the Bears actually finished the first round in 13th place when sophomore Roseanne Niven's first round score was disqualified. Freshman Angie Villela's became the No. 4 score for the Bears for the day, giving them a 312 instead of a 307, and dropping them three spots in the rankings. Cal stepped up to the challenge, posting a 299 with all four golfers shooting rounds in the 70's.

Pia Halbig shot a one-over 73, putting her at two under for the tournament, tied for the individual lead with Arizona State's Juliana Murcia. Halbi entered the day in second place, one stroke behind Murcia. The two will enter the final round tied for the lead.

Seniors Allison Goodman and Shannon Yocum shot identical two-over 74's. Goodman is currently in a tie for 12th place, standing at +3 entering the final round. Yocum, who opened with a +6 on Monday, is tied for 34th with an eight-over.

Villela had a huge turnaround in her second round score. Villela dropped 14 strokes from her first round score to post a six-over 78 for the second round of 18.

UCLA, with a two-day total of 582, continues to lead the team standings by three strokes over second-place Arizona State. Pepperdine had the low second round total with a 285. Cal had the eighth-best second-round total with a 299.

The tournament, hosted by the Arizona Wildcats, is being played at the Nicklaus-designed Peninsula Golf Course in Puerto Penasco, Sonora, Mexico, a par-72, 6,146 yard course.It concludes on Tuesday, Feb. 24. with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. MST for the final round of 18 holes.
