DAVIS, Calif. - Senior Molly Hayes and sophomore Meghan Corso each scored three goals to lead No. 5 California to a 13-6 win over No. 8 UC Davis in a nonconference women's collegiate water polo game at Schaal Aquatics Center Sunday. The Golden Bears open the year at 1-0 while the Aggies move to 2-1 on the season.
Cal opened the game with three unanswered goals. Grace Reynolds converted an assist from Julie Oreglia in the opening minutes, then Remy Champion drew a five-meter foul that resulted in Hayes' penalty shot at the 5:13 mark. Oreglia then scored on an outside shot at 4:12 to extend the lead. The Bears combined to shoot 6-for-7 in the first quarter.
The Aggies got on the board midway in the first quarter when Ashley Chandler's shot caromed off the left post then rolled across the plane behind Cal goalie Heather Stuart. Hayes scored back-to-back goals to give the Bears a four-goal advantage, 5-1 with 1:33 to play in the first period. The Aggies rallied late in the opening quarter when they converted a 6-on-5 goal at 0:54 to bring the score to 5-2, then Christi Raycraft scored on another man-up chance in the final seconds.
Cal pulled ahead by 7-3 with 2:41 in the second on Corso's 6-on-5 goal, but UC Davis cut the deficit back to three when Casie Mota delivered a long lob into the net just 25 seconds later. However, Golden Bear sophomore Darby Anderson scored at the 0:38 mark in the second to restore her team's lead to four goals.
Dakotah Mohr fired two shots in a 6-on-5 opportunity in the final seconds of the first half, but Stuart stopped both attempts. The Cal goalie finished the game with 12 total saves, including six in the third period.
UC Davis never approached closer than its three-goal deficit with the Bears scoring three goals in the third period and two in the fourth. In all, the Aggies shot 6-for-25 compared to Cal's 13-for-25 clip. The Bears return to action Jan. 30 at Pacific.
