SEATTLE, Wash. - Sophomore Julie Meyer hit a home run in the second inning, and No. 8 California (32-3) scored a victory in the Golden Bears' first Pac-10 game of the season, defeating host No. 14 Washington, 2-0. Junior Alex Sutton drove in senior Lindsay James in the fifth inning for Cal's final run of the game.
Senior Kristina Thorson earned her 22nd win of the season, striking out 11 and holding the Huskies (25-9) to just two hits.
In the second inning, Meyer launched her solo home run to left field. In the fifth inning, James reached base on a bunt. Freshman Morgan Siegel followed with a single to the shortstop, advancing James to second. Senior Emily Friedman later reached base on a fielder's choice, advancing both James and Siegel one base. Sutton followed with a ground-out to third base, allowing James to score.
Senior Haley Woods finished 2-for-4 with two singles. Sutton also went 2-for-4.
The Bears travel to UCLA to take on the Bruins Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
