This year marks Cal's third bid the NCAA regionals in school history, all in the last three years. In 2001, the Bears earned the final bid and the first in Cal history to the NCAA Championship with an eight-place finish in the NCAA Central Regional. Vikki Laing paced Cal by finishing tied for eighth (226). In 2000, the Bears placed 22nd in their first regional appearance.
2002 SEASON IN REVEW:
Since finishing 22nd in the season opener at the NCAA Fall Preview, Cal has posted nine-straight upper-half finishes this year, including winning the Oregon State Invitational in the fall and the Bay Area Classic, followed by the Spartan Invite in the spring. This is the first time in Cal history that it has won three tournaments in the same season. The Bears also have recorded three-straight top five performances, including a program-best tie for third at the Pac-10 Championship.
CAL SHOOTS 15 ROUNDS UNDER 300 IN 2001-02:
Fifteen of the 27 rounds Cal has played as a team this year have produced rounds under 300. The Bears team stroke average is 299.7, which is on pace to shatter last year's school record of 306.2.
NOTING THE BEARS:
Vikki Laing and Sarah Huarte were named to the first team All-Pac-10 team, and senior Anne Walker earned second team honors. This is the first time in Cal history that an athlete has been named to anything above honorable mention. Huarte has posted nine-straight top 25 finishes and has a team-best No. 51 national ranking.
