BERKELEY - Senior defender Luke Sassano, the Golden Bears' co-captain and an All-Pac-10 first-team selection, had two assists in Cal's 2-1 victory over UC Davis in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last Friday. His second assist led to the gamewinner in double overtime, making Sassano the Muscle Milk California Student-Athlete of the Week.
Tied for the team lead in assists with five, Sassano found Andrew Jacobson to set up the Bears' first goal against UC Davis in the first half. After the game was tied in the second half, Luke helped to shut down the Aggies' offense through the first overtime, then found Andrew Wiedeman for the gamewinner at 1:47 of the second overtime. Wiedeman credited Sassano's throw-in for perfectly setting up his winning shot.
Sassano and the Bears are now on their way to Blacksburg, Va., to take on the Virginia Tech Hokies Wednesday, Nov. 28, in the second round of the NCAA College Cup.
