VALLEJO, Calif. - The California women's golf team arguably opened the spring season with its best tournament in the seven-year history of the program. The Golden Bears shot a school record 284 to win the Bay Area Classic, hosted by Cal and USF, Tuesday by 16 strokes at Hiddenbrooke Country Club. The Bears shot a Bay Area Classic record 582 during the 36-hole event, which also broke the previous school record of 584.

Idaho led Cal by one stroke after yesterday's first round and finished second with a 598. Denver finished third with a 614, and USF was fourth at 617.

Cal swept the top-four spots in the tournament, including individual medallist Anne Walker, who fired a three-under-par 141 (70, 71) to win by six strokes. The 141 broke sophomore Sarah Huarte's previous Cal record for 36 holes of 142, set at the Oregon State Invitational in the fall. For Walker, it was her second tournament title of her collegiate career.

Cal's win marks the first Bay Area Classic title for either one of the co-hosts of the event and the Golden Bear's 284 is the lowest round in the six year history of the event, bettering the tally of 1999 team champion Pepperdine, who recorded a 289 in the opening round.

Cal teammates Ria Quiazon (75, 72), Sarah Huarte (78, 69) and Claire Dury (75, 72) each shared runner-up individual honors. Huarte's 69 on Tuesday was the lowest round of the tournament. Dury was competing in her first collegiate competition. Idaho teammates Nicole Keller (75, 73) and Noelle Hamilton (74, 74) and Portland's Sarah Walter (73, 75) shared fifth place.

Hiddenbrooke Golf Course In Vallejo served as the tournament site for the second consecutive year. The Arnold Palmer Signature Course played at par-72 with a yardage of 5,931.
