BERKELEY - While California cornerback Daymeion Hughes winning the prestigious Lott Trophy has been the top individual honor for the Golden Bears this year, he and sophomore DeSean Jackson also were honored as First Team All-Americans this past week in Orlando, Fla. The teammates were both named first team All-Americans by the Walter Camp Foundation and Jackson was a first team All-American by the Football Writers Association of American (FWAA).
The Walter Camp All-American Team was announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show which was broadcast live on Thursday evening from the Atlantic Dance Hall in Orlando. The Cingular All-American Show to announce the FWAA All-Americans was recorded on Friday evening from the same location and televised nationally on ABC on Saturday afternoon.
Both players were flown to Orlando, along with the other All-Americans, and participated in multiple events at the Disney complex to honor them for their outstanding seasons. Other celebrities in attendance at the events included Tony Dorsett, Desmond Howard, Terrell Buckley, Lou Holtz and Regis Philbin.
California, which set a school record for average home attendance this year, has posted a 9-3 record thus far this season. It is just the 15th time that the Golden Bears have won nine or more games in program history. The Bears will play Texas A&M in the 29th annual Pacific Life Holiday Bowl on Thursday, Dec. 28 at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. (Pacific). This marks the first time in school history that Cal has advanced to bowl games in four consecutive years.
Tickets for the bowl game are currently available by calling 1-800-GO-BEARS or by visiting www.CalBears.com.
