EUGENE, ORE. - Led by an impressive offensive display, including a grand slam by junior first baseman Mark Canha and home runs from sophomore catcher Chadd Krist and freshman designated hitter Devin Rodriguez, the Cal baseball team (29-22, 13-13) defeated No. 21 Oregon, 13-3, Saturday night at PK Park in Eugene. The Golden Bears also got 5.0 innings from sophomore right-hander Dixon Anderson (5-3) and a save from junior right-hander Kevin Miller. Freshman right fielder Tony Renda finished 4-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI as well.
Canha's blast over the right field fence in the third inning powered Cal ahead to a 5-0 lead and set the tone for the rest of the game. It was his third grand slam of the year and gives him 66 RBI for the season, tying him for the fourth-most single season RBI in school history (tied with Kevin Maas with 66 RBI in 1986).
Cal had scored a run in the top of the first inning when Renda led-off with a double down the left field line. He advanced to third base on junior second baseman Brian Guinn's ground out to first base and then scored on Canha's sacrifice fly to right field foul territory.
Oregon scored a run in the bottom of the third inning when Jack Marder hit into a bases loaded double play off Anderson, who improved to 5-3 (four hits, three runs, four walks, three strikeouts). Miller captured his second save of the season with a solid outing (4.0 innings, two hits, no runs, three strikeouts).
The Bears tallied two more runs in the fourth inning on a two-run double to left field by Renda and two runs in the fifth inning on Rodriguez's home run down the right field line off Oregon starter Justin LaTempa (5-3, 4.1 innings, eight hits, nine runs, eight earned runs, one walk, two strikeouts).
The Ducks scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning on Marcus Piazzisi's two-run single through the right side of the infield.
But Cal added four runs in the sixth inning on Guinn's RBI single up the middle and Krist's three-run homer off the Oregon scoreboard in left center field. It was Krist's team-leading 10th home run of the year.
In a crucial game in Cal's bid for an NCAA postseason bid, the Bears have now captured the series after defeating the Ducks (37-22, 12-14), 4-3, on Friday. The Bears will next play Oregon in the third game of the three-game Pac-10 series, Sunday, May 30 at 1 p.m. at PK Park.
Cal: Canha, grand slam in the third inning. Rodriguez, two-run homer in the fifth inning. Krist, three-run homer in the sixth inning.
