PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Callif. -

The California Golden Bears finished seventh at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge. The 16-team tournament played at the Par 71, 5,912 yard Palos Verdes Golf Course opened the spring portion of the season for the Bears. Cal entered the final round in sixth place, but Michigan State posted a 301 in their final round, 15 strokes better than their previous best round in the tournament, to edge past the Bears and take over sixth place with a total score of 937. The Bears had a 317 in the first round, 312 on Tuesday, and closed out with a 315 for an overall 944. Arizona State won the tournament with a 898 (305-294-299). Wake Forest took second with a 916 (315-306-295). UCLA followed in third with a 917 (314-305-298).

"Seventh is a disappointing finish for us," said Head Coach Nancy McDaniel. "We had better weather today, setting up the opportunity to make a charge, and we didn't. The course really exploited the shortcomings of our short game. This could be a good learning experience for us. A lot of times you learn more by getting beaten up than from the best of experiences."

The first two days of the tournament were played in damp, cold, and blustery conditions. Wind gusts of 30 mph and fairly steady winds and off and on rains made the conditions challenging.

"We were not prepared for the conditions we were playing in. Don't know that anyone really could be prepared for that."

The skies cleared and the winds died down for the final round of the tournament.

"I felt really good about the first day," said McDaniel. "The team really dug in their heels and fought through the conditions. I was disappointed with our play down the stretch the final two days."

Senior Shannon Yocum and sophomore Pia Halbig led the team shooting a 22-over for the tournament, tying for 28th place among the individuals. Yocum and Halbig each posted a 79 in the opening round. Halbig improved to a 75 on day two with Yocum dropping two strokes to post a 77. In the third round, Halbig posted an 81 and Yocum a 79 to give both players a 235 (+22). Senior Allison Goodman shot the team's low round for the tournament on Wednesday. Goodman had a 74 (+3), the lowest round for the Bears. Goodman started strong, leading the team in the first round with a 78, but stumbled in the second round, posting an 84. She dropped ten strokes in the third round to finish with a 236 (+ 23), in a tie for 34th place.

"I thought that Allie had a great turnaround," said McDaniel. "Her second day finish was such a disappointment. It really shows character and her leadership as a senior to come back and have such a solid final round."

Diane Kwon (240, +27) and Roseanne Niven (250, +37) rounded out the lineup for the Bears. Arizona State's Juliana Murcia won the medalist honors with a 214 (+1).

The Bears next action will be south of the border to play in the Wildcat Invitational in Puerto Penasco, Sonora, Mexico, Feb. 22-24.
