TEMPE, Ariz. - California women's tennis took part in day one of the 13th annual Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational tournament on the courts of the Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe, Ariz. today. Senior Stephanie Kusano had the first round bye as the top-seeded player in the tournament, defeating ASU's Wendy Pilecka in straight sets to advance to Saturday's quarterfinal round along with three other Cal players.
Junior Claire Ilcinkas won her first match against Michigan's Rika Tatsuno in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 to face Stanford's Whitney Deason, the No. 3-seeded player at the invitational. Ilcinkas played nearly flawless in the second round as well, upsetting Deason 6-2, 6-2. Junior Bojana Bobusic and freshman Marina Cossou also won both of their first and second round matches to set themselves up for quarterfinal matches on Saturday.
In doubles play, Cossou and Ilcinkas defeated Utah's duo of Ferris and Walsh 8-2 while Bobusic and freshman Rachael Dillon were edged by Michigan's Howard and Taney in an 8-6 match.
The Invitational is host to women's tennis players from Cal, Stanford, Purdue, Michigan, Kansas State, Utah and host school, Arizona State.
