BERKELEY - California head coach Caren Horstmeyer announced today the signing of four outstanding prep basketball players, including three of the top 20 seniors in Northern California. Leigh Gregory, Kristin Iwanaga, Alisa Lewis and Jackie Lord have all signed National Letters of Intent to play basketball at Cal beginning with the 2001-02 season.

"We are very pleased with our fall recruiting class," said Horstmeyer. "Every player is from strong, winning programs with great traditions. We look forward to the winning mentality they'll bring to the growing positive outlook we have in Berkeley."

Gregory, a 6-0 power forward from Carondelet High School in Concord, led her team to a 29-3 record as a junior. She was tabbed as one of Rivals.com's Top 20 seniors in Northern California after leading her team to the Division II NorCal finals as a junior, averaging 14.7 ppg. Wake Forest was one of the other schools this all-league honoree was considering.

"Leigh is a versatile player who will see time at both the three and four spots at Cal," said Horstmeyer. "She possesses excellent three-point range and also plays well with her back to the basket."

A 5-6 point guard from Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose, Iwanaga has helped propel her team to an 82-3 record during her first three seasons, including an appearance in the NorCal finals last year. Also on Rivals.com's Top 20 NorCal senior list, Iwanaga averaged eight points, six assists and three steals as a junior. Iwanaga was a two-time all-league selection and an honorable mention all-state honoree as a sophomore when she was the starting point guard on Mitty's 1999 state championship team, which posted a 31-0 record. She will be reunited next year with her former high school coach Sue Phillips-Chargin, who is in her first season as an assistant coach at California.

"Kristin is a solid point guard who doesn't make mistakes and leads by example," said Horstmeyer. "She also is blessed with good speed."

A former Bay Area player at Fairfield High School, Lewis is in her first year at Gonzaga Prep in Spokane, Wash. Lewis, a 6-0 small/power forward, averaged 19.0 ppg and 10.0 rpg at Fairfield as a junior. She also was selected a Rivals.com Top 20 NorCal senior pick after garnering all-league and all-city recognition during her sophomore and junior campaigns.

"Alisa is a great athlete and has good strength," said Horstmeyer. "She currently plays inside but will likely see more time on the perimeter at Cal."

Lord, a 5-8 athlete who can play both guard positions, paced Brea High School (Los Angeles area) to the Division II state title as a junior. She led her team to a 29-6 record last season, posting 14.5 points and 4.1 assists per game.

"Jackie is a great outside shooter," said Horsmeyer. "She handles the ball well, is tough and excels on defense."
