No. 5 Cal Places Fifth at PING/ASU Invitational

TEMPE, Ariz. - No. 5 California posted a plus-22 886 to finish fifth at the PING/ASU Invitational Sunday at Karsten Golf Course. The Golden Bears, who won last year's event and began the day in fourth, concluded the tournament with a 294 for its best round of the weekend.

No. 2 UCLA posted a minus-three 861 over 54 holes to win the tournament by 16 strokes over No. 9 USC (877). No. 6 New Mexico took third at 881, and No. 17 Texas (885) was fourth.

The Bruins' Charlotte Mayorkas defended her individual crown by five shots at minus-nine 207. Mayorkas carded a 65 (-7) in the final round. Her teammate, Gina Umeck, was second at 212, followed by Pepperdine's Carolina Llano at 213.

The Bears had a dynamic duo of their own in sophomore Sophia Sheridan and senior Sarah Huarte. Sheridan grabbed a share of sixth at 217, while Huarte tied for ninth at 218. It marked Huarte's fifth and Sheridan's fourth top 10 showings of the season. Sophomore Sofie Andersson moved up to a tie for 30th after firing a 73 on Sunday, equaling Sheridan and Hurate's low Bear round of the day.

Cal senior Anna Temple tied for 50th at 229, shooting her low round (75) over the final 18 holes. Senior Claire Dury tied for 59th (232), and freshman Danielle Nash, who was competing as an individual, tied for 70th (235).

Next up for the Bears is the Pac-10 Championships April 19-21 in Los Angeles. Cal won its first Pac-10 title in 2003.
