BERKELEY - Former California head football coach Bruce Snyder, who guided the Golden Bear program from 1987-91, passed away Monday after a 10-month battle with cancer. Snyder, 69, is survived by wife, three daughters, a son-in-law, two grandchildren, four sisters, two brothers and his beloved dog, Ella. Service arrangements will be private.

Snyder compiled a 29-24-4 record at Cal, leading the Bears to a pair of bowl berths in the process. His 1990 squad finished 7-4-1 after defeating Wyoming, 17-15, in the Copper Bowl - Cal's first bowl berth in 11 years and first bowl win since 1938. Snyder's best season came a year later in 1991 when the Bears were 10-2, including a 37-13 victory over Clemson in the Citrus Bowl, and earned a No. 8 final ranking from the Associated Press.

The 1990 Pac-10 Coach of the Year, Snyder coached four first-team All-Americans at Cal - punter Scott Tabor (1987), punter Robbie Keen (1989), offensive tackle Troy Auzenne (1991) and tailback Russell White (1991). In addition, quarterback Mike Pawlawski was named the Pac-10 Co-Offensive Player of the Year in 1991.

Pawlawski, Auzenne and White are all members of the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame. Other Cal Hall of Famers to play for Snyder were linebacker David Ortega and wide receiver Sean Dawkins.

After leaving Cal, Snyder coached nine seasons at Arizona State, where he went 58-47 from 1992-2000. He was voted Pac-10 Coach of Year and National Coach of the Year in 1996 when he led the Sun Devils to an 11-0 regular-season record, a Pac-10 title and berth in the Rose Bowl.

A collegiate coach for 20 years, Snyder (born March 14, 1940) also coached Utah State from 1976-82 and had a 126-106-5 (.542) overall record.

The family also asked that in lieu of flowers to make a charitable donation to one of the following in Coach Snyder's name:
