BERKELEY - Freshman forward Andrew Wiedeman scored two goals and freshman forward Scot Van Buskirk added another to power 20th-ranked California to a 3-0 Pac-10 victory over Oregon State on a sunny Sunday at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears improved their record to 7-2-1 (2-0 Pac-10), while Oregon State fell to 3-7-0 (0-2-0 Pac-10).
In a 0-0 first half, Cal forced Oregon State goalkeeper Packy Deenihan to make three saves, while OSU's Tracy Hasson forced Cal sophomore goalkeeper Stefan Frei to make a save in the eighth minute with the first shot of the game.
Wiedeman, who tied for the game high with three shots, broke the deadlock in the 54th minute, taking a pass from Cal senior midfielder Luke Sassano, dribbling around Deenihan and firing inside the far post for a 1-0 Bears lead.
In the 58th minute, senior forward Javier Ayala-Hil drew Deenihan off his goalline and passed to Wiedeman, who scored on an open net from close range for a 2-0 Cal lead.
Another freshman forward, Davis Paul, crossed to Van Buskirk in the 75th minute, and Van Buskirk headed in the third and final goal of the game from point-blank range.
Frei made three saves and Deenihan made five saves in 90 minutes of play. Cal outshot OSU, 14-12, for the game.
Cal continues Pac-10 action when it takes on San Diego State at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12, in San Diego and plays UCLA at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14, in Los Angeles.
