FULLERTON, Calif. - Trailing after two rotations visiting California (1-0) rallied to defeat Cal State Fullerton (0-2), 193.925-192.175 Saturday night at Titan Gym. The Titans could not hold on to their slim advantage, suffering numerous falls on the balance beam, as the Golden Bears shined in the final two events of the night to defeat Fullerton in front of 402 fans in the Titan's home opener.
"Overall, it was very good meet," said Cal coach Trina Tinti. "For the first meet, to receive a high 193, almost a 194, is great. That's up there with what the top 10 teams do at this time of the season."
The Titans held a narrow lead after the first two events, scoring a 47.875 on the vault and a 48.450 on the uneven bars for a total of 96.325. Cal was right behind Fullerton with a 96.250 total after two rotations.
However, the Bears stormed back with the Titans struggling on the beam, scoring a 48.575 on the floor exercise while the Titans scored a 47.450 on the beam, and solidified the victory with a 49.100 score on the beam to Fullerton's 48.400 on the floor.
Freshman standout My-Lan Dodd shined in her first collegiate meet placing no lower than third place in three of four events en route to winning the all-arounds (39.125). The Seattle native earned the highest score of the evening on any event when she drew a 9.900 on the beam. In addition, sophomore Karissa Chock debuted the 2002 season with a first place finish on the vault (9.775).
The Bears return to action next Friday when they host Oregon State, at 7:30 p.m. at Haas Pavilion.
