Golden Bears Push Pair of Doubles Teams Into Semifinals

OJAI, Calif. - The California women's tennis team continued play at the 2008 Pacific-10 Conference Tennis Championships today at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club in Ojai, Calif. Junior Claire Ilcinkas will represent the Golden Bears in one semifinal match for the singles championship after advancing today. She will face fourth-seeded Riza Zalameda of UCLA in an 11 a.m. start tomorrow.

Freshman Marina Cossou and senior Cristina Visico fell in singles quarterfinal matches today; Cossou to seventh-seeded Nadia Abdala of Arizona State and Visico to second-seeded Amanda Fink of USC.

In the doubles championship, Cal's duo of seniors Susie Babos and Stephanie Kusano advanced to the semifinal as the fourth seed and will face USC's Fink and Gabriela Niculescu in a 3:30 p.m. match tomorrow. Cossou and Ilcinkas also earned a semifinal appearance with a 9-7 quarterfinal win against Hein and McKenna of Arizona State. They will face another Sun Devil duo, Leitch and Pilecka for the right to advance to the championship match.

In the Women's Invitational Doubles draw, freshman Rachael Dillon and senior Daron Moore secured two wins on the day to get a berth in the semifinal match against Cekic and Stefanova of Washington State. Freshman Bobbie Englert teamed up with Ashley Anderson of Washington in the invitational draw but the pair fell to third-seeded Hirt and Seremeta of Oregon by an 8-4 count in the opening round.
