No. 6/7 Cal Hosts Miami (Ohio), Travels to Capital Classic

ON DECK FOR THE GOLDEN BEARS
The No. 6/7 California softball team (19-2) hosts Miami (Ohio) (12-13) Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Levine-Fricke Field. The Golden Bears then travel to Sacramento for the Capital Classic tournament, Friday-Sunday. Cal is scheduled to face Colorado State, Columbia, Illinois, Iowa and Long Island in the three-day tournament.

CROSS-COUNTRY CONNECTIONS
Miami (Ohio) is coached by Angie Jacobs, who graduated from Cal in 1989. Jacobs played on the Bears' softball team in 1985 and 1987-89. Current Cal coach Diane Ninemire took over the Bears' program as head coach before the 1988 season. She was an assistant coach with Donna Terry from 1983-87. Cal sophomore Jessica Moore was a member of the Miami (Ohio) team last season.

MIAMI (OHIO) VISITS CALIFORNIA
The Bears will be meeting the RedHawks for the first time since 2002. Cal was a 9-0 winner in five innings in that game, which took place at the Capital Classic.

The 2006 RedHawks are led by sophomore infielder Halle Popson, who is batting .441 and junior utility player Leslie Macedo (.403). Miami's pitching has been paced by senior Courtney Salmon (6-6). Miami (Ohio) is coached by Angie Jacobs, who graduated from Cal in 1989. In 2005, Miami (Ohio) went 34-26 and 13-8 in the Mid-American Conference.

A LOOK AT THE CAPITAL CLASSIC FIELD
Cal opens tournament play Friday against Colorado State (15-7) at 10 a.m. The Bears defeated the Rams 4-2 at the NIST last weekend. The game was started late Saturday evening and continued the following morning after a rain postponement. The Rams compete in the Mountain West Conference and are coached by Mary Yori. Columbia and Cal face off at 3 p.m. Friday. The Lions (6-4) are coached by Kayla Noonan. It is the first meeting between Cal and Columbia.

Saturday morning will see Cal take on Illinois (7-10) at 10 a.m. The Bears defeated the Illini earlier this season at the UNLV Tournament by a score of 6-4. Illinois competes in the Big Ten and is led by coach Terri Sullivan.

Cal and Iowa face off at 3 p.m. Saturday. The Hawkeyes (11-8) have been ranked in the Top 25 on and off this season. Iowa, a member of the Big Ten, is coached by Gayle Blevins. Cal faced Iowa last year at the NIST, and won by a score of 7-2.

The Bears have just one game scheduled Sunday, with Cal taking on Long Island (6-9) at 11 a.m. The Bears last faced Long Island in 2003, when Cal won 9-0. Long Island competes in the Northeast conference and is coached by Roy Kortmann.

CAL'S HISTORY AT THE CAPITAL CLASSIC
Last year at the Capital Classic, Cal went 1-1. The Bears opened with a 2-1 loss against No. 23 Northwestern, followed with a 6-0 win over Portland State. Cal is 44-13 all-time at the Capital Classic. The Bears were crowned tournament champions in both 2000 and 1994.
