DeNesha Stallworth scored 13 points and three teammates also hit double figures to lead No. 15/22 California past Southern U. 78-47 in Saturday's opening game of the Buckeye Classic.

Southern was doomed by cold shooting. The Jaguars missed 14 of their first 15 shots, making three of their last six shots of the half to end up 6 for 33 (18 percent) to trail 24-16. They shot 48 percent in the second half, but Cal scored the first 13 points and never looked back.

Cal had a hard time finding their rhythm in the first half, shooting 29.4 percent from the field and hitting 57.1 percent of their field goals. Alexis Gray-Lawson provided an early spark for Cal, winning five straight rebound struggles on the defensive side. She ended the half with seven boards. Freshman guard Eliza Piere had a string of four steals in four consecutive Jaguar possessions to give Cal a breath of life midway through the period.

In the second half, Cal turned on the offense, hitting 62.1 percent of their shots from the field, including draining five of their ten three-point attempts. They also shored up their freethrow shooting with just one miss in 14 attempts.

Freshman forward Gennifer Brandon had her first career double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. DeNesha Stallworth, despite a cold-shooting game, lead the Bears with 13 points.

Cal advances to Sunday's championship, where they'll play the winner of No. 3-ranked Ohio State at 11 a.m. Pacific Time (2 p.m. Eastern Time).
