Fullerton, Calif. - Power seems to be contagious on this team and leadoff hitter Vicky Galindo has caught the bug from cleanup batter Haley Woods. They both went deep today, Galindo twice, leading No. 3 California to a 3-2 win over UC Santa Barbara. The Golden Bears completed a perfect Worth Tournament, winning all five games.
Woods put the Bears on the board in the second when she led off with a home run. It was her sixth home run on the season to lead the team.
But Galindo isn't far behind the Bears projected number one slugger. In the third, it was Galindo's turn to take UCSB hurler Lindsay Sommer deep. Galindo had Sommer's number again in the fifth inning with another solo shot to right center.
One day removed from going 7-8 from the plate with a grand slam, Galindo is one of the hottest hitters in the country. She wrapped up tournament play going 13-18 (.722) with seven runs, seven RBI, and three home runs. She has five home runs on the season, four in her last six games.
The Bears needed every long ball they could summon in what was a tight contest. The Gauchos manufactured runs against Kelly Anderson in the fourth and sixth, but could not break through for a big inning. Anderson limited UCSB to three hits and struck out five in her ninth complete game this season.
Cal looks ahead to a make-up game at Pacific this Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. before it heads to the San Jose State-hosted NIST Tournament.
