Postgame Quotes: California-Colorado
Jan. 12, 2012
CALIFORNIA HEAD COACH MIKE MONTGOMERY
On the game
"We sure didn't play well, offensively, but defense kept us in. I feel good about that. We didn't give in. Offensively, we had our struggles. When you play that bad, offensively, and still win, you have got to feel lucky."
"You have to give all the credit to Colorado. They are a solid basketball team. They don't make a lot of mistakes. They are veteran; they are physical, and they are a good team. We knew they were going to be good, but they got in our heads a little bit and I think we allowed them to. We got frustrated and started shooting the ball, early. Fortunately, we were able to defend a little bit."
On senior F Harper Kamp
"Harper played well, thank goodness. We got the ball to him [and] he made some key shots, late. Somebody had to play. Somebody had to score, or we were going to be in deep trouble. Harper played well. That is the kind of thing we expect from him; need from him."
On Colorado's defense
"I think Colorado doesn't give in much. Defensively, they are very well schooled, they know exactly what they want to do and they do a good job of it. They took our guys out. We probably gave in to them a little bit, and that is on us, but you have to give them credit because they came after us and took us out of things."
On Colorado F Austin Dufault
"Dufault had a really good game. He was nine-for-22 from three, coming in. I suppose that is enough evidence he can shoot the three. I don't think we really believed that was something that was his strength. He was 3-for-4. It did hurt us."
Harper Kamp, Sr. F
On his mentality going into the game
"I think it was just a matter of me going out with a little more confidence, and having confidence in my jumper. Guys like Richard [Solomon] helping me out before the game, just reminding me to have fun with the game. That was my goal tonight: just help my teammates any way I could."
On Colorado's defense
"They are just disciplined. They are in pretty good position, all the time. We knew going in, they have good defensive principles, and they stuck to that. They played hard."
On his offensive performance
"I have been having my struggles, here and there; still trying to help the team. Offensively, you could say I have been having struggles. I just had to focus, and help the team, any way I could. I don't have an unlimited amount of games left, so I am just trying to have fun."
Justin Cobbs, So. G
On Harper Kamp's performance
"Harper gave us everything. He is a beast on the boards for his size. He gets out there on defense; takes charges. Allen [Crabbe] gets a lot of the praise since he is making the shots, but Harper is the man getting us open and setting the screens. Tonight, he finally did what he had to do, and we needed that tonight."
On the win
"It is just a great team victory. Our two scorers didn't shoot the ball, well, but we still did well. It gave us a lot of confidence that we can win when things don't go our way. The home games are a must. At home, you have to do what it takes no matter who you are playing."
