CAL'S LINEUP: Head coach Steve Desimone has selected the following five players to represent Cal at the John Burns Intercollegiate:

MOST RECENTLY: California won its second tournament of the fall, firing a combined 9-under-par total of 855 to win the Fresno Lexus Classic on Oct. 16-17. Cal led the event wire-to-wire, as all six Bears finished among the Top 14. Dong Yi, who finished tied for second place with 2-under-par total of 214 and Robert Hamilton, sixth overall, were Cal's top golfers. Just two strokes behind Hamilton was Dan Arroyo and Josh Levin, who both carded three-round totals of 1-over 217 to finish in a tie for seventh. Dan Coyle and Han Lee finished up strong with 2-under-par 70s in the final round to finish in a tie for 14th at 4-over 220.

TOP 5 OR BUST: You can't have a much better fall than the Bears did. Cal finished in the Top 5 in all five of its fall tournaments, including taking top honors at the Falcon Invitational and Fresno Classic. Cal posted a fall tournament-low of 12-under 852 at the Falcon Invitaional, but its best all-around outing may have come at the Fresno Classic, when the Bears combined to shoot 9-under 855, placing all six golfers in the Top 14.

HOW LOW CAN YOU GO: Cal had five golfers fire sub-70 rounds during the fall. Han Lee, Dong Yi and Dan Coyle each fired 68s, while Dan Arroyo and Josh Levin carded 69s. Lee finished with the Bears best stroke average at 71.8, with Arroyo (72.1), Coyle (72.5) and Yi (72.5) not far behind.

DEEP AND TOUGH TO BEAT: The Bearts were a model of consistency during the fall. And though Cal was unable to produce an individual medalist, six of seven golfers did register at least one Top 10 finish. Dan Arroyo, Dan Coyle, Han Lee and Dong Yi, each recorded two with Lee's 2nd at the Falcon Invitational and Yi's 2nd at the Fresno Classic leading the way. Overall, Cal had a Top 10 finisher in four of five tournaments.

HAN HAD HOT HAND: Through the season's first three tournaments, junior Han Lee has without a doubt the Bears hottest golfer. Lee opened the season with a career-best third place finish at the Falcon Invitational, firing a 5-under 211. He then came right back at the Pacific Invitational to card another 211. Lee was also Cal's top finisher at the Husky Invitational, finishing with a three round total of 219 in 14th. For the season, Lee's stroke average is a rock solid 71.8, over three strokes per round lower than he shot during the 1997-98 season when he averaged 74.5 in 35 rounds of competition.

HAMILTON ON THE RISE: No golfer on the Cal team showed more improvement during the fall than Sacramento State-transfer Robert Hamilton. After a standout 1998 campaign at Sac. State, Hamilton was unable to crack the Bears starting five until Cal's third tournament of the fall. Once in the starting lineup, however, he made his presence felt. After a solid but unspectacular debut at the Husky Invitational, Hamilton came back to post a pair of 1-under-par 215s at the Missouri Bluffs Intercollegiate and the Fresno Lexus Classic. His total at Fresno was good enough to place him in seventh overall. Hamilton finished the fall with a 73.2 stroke average over nine rounds of play. However, that number dropped to 71.7 over his final six rounds, tops on the team in the Bears final two tournaments.

YI BACK IN THE SWING OF THINGS: After missing the entire spring campaign with a wrist injury that ultimately required surgery, Dong Yi has returned to the Cal lineup and appears to have picked up right where he left off. Yi shot a three round total of 3-under 213 at the Falcon Invitational followed by a 1-over total of 217 at the Pacific Invitational. But he really caught fire at the Fresno Classic, firing a three-round total of 2-under 214 that included an incredible chip-in on the tournament's final hole to seal the win for Cal.

ARROYO FINISHES STRONG: After receiving honorable mention All-America accolades last spring, Dan Arroyo had big plans for 1998-99. Nevertheless, the senior from Walnut Creek, Calif., got out to a less-than-Arroyo-like start during the fall. That didn't last long, however, as he posted a pair of Top 10 finishes to close out the fall. Arroyo got things back on track at the Missouri Bluffs Intercollegiate, firing a 3-under 210 to finish in a tie for third place. He then recorded a strong tied for seventh at Fresno with a 1-over total of 217 to finish the fall with the team's second best stroke average.
