BERKELEY -- University of California head football coach Jeff Tedford has announced the hiring of R. Todd Littlejohn as the Golden Bears' new secondary coach. Littlejohn, who spent the past season at the University of Buffalo, hopes to be in Berkeley in time for California's final week of spring football drills, which begins on Monday.

"We feel great about the hire," Tedford said. "Coach Littlejohn has experience and familiarity with the West Coast in general as a coach and recruiter, and with the Pac-10 Conference specifically. The timeline is not necessarily the best but we're excited to have him."

Littlejohn arrives from Buffalo, but is a California native and a Fresno State graduate. He has spent time as an assistant coach at San Jose State and UCLA, and also served as defensive coordinator and director of player personnel for the San Jose SaberCats of the Arena Football League.

"It sounds cliche, but this is a great opportunity," Littlejohn said. "It's an opportunity to work for one of the best defensive coordinators (Bob Gregory) and one of the best head coaches in the country. To be able to be in that environment while surrounded by family and friends is very exciting."

A Bakersfield native, Littlejohn began his college playing career at West Texas State, where he was an honorable mention All-America defensive back and a two-time all-Missouri Valley Conference selection. He later transferred to Fresno State, where he was a member of the Bulldogs' 1988 College World Series baseball team. He was graduated from Fresno State in 1989 with a degree in sociology.

Prior to his year at Buffalo, Littlejohn spent the 2003 and 2004 seasons on the Syracuse staff. That stay was preceded by two seasons at UCLA. During Littlejohn's stint in Westwood, the Bruins led the Pac-10 in total defense and pass efficiency defense. His first secondary at UCLA consisted of Rick Manning, Matt Ware, Marques Anderson and Ben Emanuel. All four of those players spent time in the NFL, with Anderson and Emanuel playing for the San Francisco 49ers.

He also had a stop at Utah State (1998-1999), where he coached the wide receivers and special teams, before joining the San Jose State program in 2000. His season in San Jose saw the Spartans intercept 15 passes. After leaving SJSU for the Sabercats, Littlejohn headed to UCLA, followed by his two seasons at Syracuse, where he coached a pair of all-Big East defensive backs.

He is married to the former Toi-yan Ison of Berkeley and has four daughters: Kayla (15), Aundria (9), Aniya (5) and Ahria (2).
