Cal Alumnus Copeland Wins 100 Free at U.S. National Championships

ATLANTA - Former California All-American William Copeland set a meet record by winning the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 41.75 at the 2008 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming Short Course National Championship on Saturday in the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. Copeland topped a strong field that included 2008 U.S. Olympic gold medalist Matt Grevers, who was second in 41.85, 2008 Australian Olympic bronze medalist Matt Targett, who was third in 41.93, and 2008 U.S. Olympic gold medalist Ryan Lochte, who was fourth in 41.99.

Copeland, a six-time All-American and four-time Pac-10 champion for Cal in the 2007-08 season, also placed second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 19.05 and 11th in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:35.45 in Atlanta.

In Cal's all-time record books, the product of Lexington, Va., is currently the sixth-fastest Bear in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 42.47 and the sixth-fastest swimmer in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 19.30.
