Berkeley - The honors keep piling up for the newest Cal Football players as five different Golden Bear recruits from the high school ranks were selected arlier this week to participate in the annual Cal-Texas Shrine All-Star Game.
The game will be played on Saturday, June 26 and will be televised regionally by Fox Sports Net. Among the players selected to play in the game were quarterback Kyle Boller and offensive linemen David Hays and Matt Schafer on offense. The California state defensive team will be bolstered by a pair of secondary stars in Nnamdi Asomugha and Atari Callen. Callen will also likely play a role in the return game.
There were 36 preps named to the California team. California leads the series 4-0 and Golden Bear cornerback Derrick Gardner, who just completed his senior year at Cal, was the first MVP of the series back in the summer of 1995.
Among Pac-10 teams, nine UCLA players were selected, eight USC players, three Oregon players and one each from Arizona and Washington State. Cal had two of the seven offensive linemen named to the California team as well as two of the seven defensive backs named to the squad. Stanford's lone participant is on the Texas state team.
