After capturing its first tournament of the 2008 fall season, the California women's golf team looks to continue its winning ways at the Badger Invitational Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 27-28, at the University Ridge Golf Course in Verona, Wis.
The University Ridge Golf Course is a 6,216-yard, par-72 course designed by Robert Trent Jones. It was just recently renovated and lengthened, and had its grand re-opening this July. The 54-hole tournament begins with a 36-hole Saturday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. CDT. Sunday's final round will also feature an 8:30 a.m. CDT shotgun start.
The Badger Invitational will feature 12 different teams, highlighted by a Cal team that won the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic Sept. 8-9 in Fort Collins, Colo. The Bears opened their season by winning the Ptarmigan Classic for the second year in a row by posting an 18-under 846; six strokes better than second place Colorado. Senior Shannon Yocum won medalist honors in defending her 2007 individual championship by posting an 8-under 208.
The rest of the Badger Invitational field includes host Wisconsin, the College of Charleston, Georgetown, Illinois, Indiana, Kennesaw State, Maryland, Minnesota, Penn State, Southern Methodist and Tulane. Cal's lineup at the tournament in Wisconsin will feature, in order, seniors Shannon Yocum and Allison Goodman, freshman Diane Kwon, sophomore Pia Halbig and freshman Angela Villela.
"We are really excited to go out of our region and see where we stand," said Cal Coach Nancy McDaniel. "The time difference will be a challenge and that will be great training for NCAA's which are in Maryland in May. We are looking forward to building on our solid performance at Colorado State earlier this month."
